Martin Coloumbe, captain of Canadian team Osedea, didn’t have to look far when it came to finding teammates. He’d been talking about the Patagonian Expedition Race incessantly. When registration finally opened for the 2016 competition, his brother Alexandre, his long-term friend Benoit Plourde, and Australian-native Elizabeth Woodgate all wanted in. Alexandre and Martin have previously summited Aconcagua, the highest mountain outside of Asia. Benoit joined them on a 6-day mountain bike ride from Durango, Colorado to Moab, Utah. Benoit also spent a while exploring Europe on a road bike, traversing more than 1,000 kilometers.
None of the team members have participated in PER before, and so Martin says their goal is “is to complete each section of the race and cross the finish line with smiles on our faces.” He thinks that the most challenging aspect will be facing the unknown. “In the past,” Martin said, “we have mostly trained and competed in well structured environments. Being in this incredible theatre that is Patagonia, making our way through untamed wilderness and facing unpredictable weather will be both amazing and challenging.”
