About Patagonia
Chilean Patagonia and Antarctica offer sublime landscapes. Trips organized by the race organizers, Nómadas Outdoor Services, a unique experience that will make a mark forever on the lives of those who venture there.
Mountains, glaciers, fjords, islands and pristine forests; a wild and indomitable territory that, with all its magic, offers pure nature. A land of aboriginal peoples, adventures and secrets still to be unveiled in the southernmost area of South America.
The Chilean Southern Patagonia extends from Campo de Hielo Sur (Southern Ice Field) to Cape Horn, one of the most virgin areas of the planet. Magellan Region is one of the most extensive areas of the country, with 50.966 square surface miles, an area bigger than Belgium, Holland and Switzerland as a whole. However, it is the least populated with an average of 3.08 inhabitants per square mile.
In this world’s corner, the natural surroundings remain practically virginal. In this wild and challenging geography, vast masses of ice and granite towers rise majestically. The region is known for its numerous and actives fjords, which line more than 24.800 miles of coast, which is more expansive than the coasts of Norway and New Zealand together.
Tierra del Fuego, Torres del Paine National Park and Magellan Strait, are just some of the attractions of a region with a large number of territories that are practically unexplored. Over 50% of the region corresponds to protected areas: Bernardo O’Higgins National Park, Alberto de d’Agostini National Park, Cape Horn National Park, Alacalufes National Reserve, Karukinka Conservation Area and Francisco Coloane Marine Park.
With restless and unpredictable weather, in this area one can encounter the final human settlements on the continent. Its history has always been linked to seamen and adventurers, frontiersmen and mythical native inhabitants. It’s an area of vast indomitable landscapes, islands and channels that maintain their legendary characteristics of old.
The Portuguese seaman Hernando de Magallanes (Ferdinand Magellan) arrived in the area in 1520 looking for a passage to the East Indies. He baptized “Tierra del Fuego” (Land of Fire) the big island that faces the South American continent, after observing the bonfires the Onas or Selknam Natives made on the strait’s banks.
Patagonia is the closest territory to the Antarctic continent and South Pole, separated by only 932 miles. Ships and aircraft frequently cross to the white continent, providing an opportunity for tourists to immerse themselves in this magnificent spectacle of nature - surrounded by the white landscape of volcanoes, icebergs and glaciers. Colonies of thousands of penguins, seals and sea elephants, and other species can be seen.

Our Motivation
One of our main motivations in developing the PATAGONIAN EXPEDITION RACE has been to make people aware of the need to protect our environment. We want to show the world that there exists, in this isolated corner of the planet, a virgin territory of great scenic beauty and with a great diversity of native species that must be protected.
